Brazil came from behind to beat Japan 2-1 in injury-time, having trailed at the break, with goals by Casemiro and Gabriel Martinelli breaking Japanese hearts. Despite not quite reaching their peak yet, Brazil will start as favourites here as they look to move a step closer towards a first World Cup triumph since 2002. Norway had Erling Braut Haaland to thank for a late winner in their last-32 match against Ivory Coast, after Amad Diallo's stunning goal had seemed enough to take the game into extra time.

Mexico vs England (World Cup)

Coverage of the fourth round-of-16 match, which takes place at Mexico City Stadium. England claimed a 3-0 win over Senegal in the corresponding match of the 2022 World Cup thanks to goals by Jordan Henderson, Bukayo Saka and Harry Kane. Should they have defeated DR Congo in the round of 32, the Three Lions will be involved in this contest once again, with Mexico their opponents. The co-hosts beat Ecuador 2-0 in the last round thanks to first-half goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez. Facing the Mexicans at this venue would be a particularly tough test as they have an excellent record here over the years.

Portugal vs Spain (World Cup)

Coverage of the fifth round-of-16 match, which takes place at Dallas Stadium in the USA. Portugal finished second in their group, below Colombia and above DR Congo and Uzbekistan with two draws and a win before coming back from behind in their round-of-32 match with Croatia to prevail 2-1. Spain got off to a disappointing start with a goalless draw against Cape Verde, but they are still yet to concede in this tournament, having followed that result up with wins against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in the group stage, before comfortably defeating Austria 3-0 in the next round. However, this is likely to be their toughest test so far, and the last meeting between the Iberian rivals saw Portugal win on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the final of the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League in Germany.

USA vs Belgium (World Cup)

Coverage of the sixth round-of-16 match, which takes place at Seattle Stadium in the USA. The USA have made the most of home advantage and have made serene progress through to this stage, including a 2-0 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the last round. They will fancy their chances against a Belgian side who have looked a shadow of their former selves, but who pulled off a remarkable win against Senegal in the last 32, having been 2-0 down heading into the final minutes.

Argentina vs Egypt (World Cup)

Coverage of the seventh round-of-16 match, which takes place at Atlanta Stadium in the USA. Argentina were involved a remarkable last-16 match, edging past minnows Cape Verde 3-2 after extra-time, with the tournament debutantes making sure they would be remembered as one of the highlights of these finals. Egypt needed a penalty shootout to beat Australia in the last round, breaking new ground by winning a World Cup finals knockout match for the first time.

Switzerland vs Colombia (World Cup)

Coverage of the eighth round-of-16 match, which takes place at BC Place Vancouver in Canada. Switzerland had a game to forget at the corresponding stage of the 2022 World Cup when they were thrashed 6-1 by Portugal. However, they will be hopeful of a much stronger showing this time around, having topped a group containing Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar, before easing past Algeria 2-0 in the round of 32. Colombia have only scored five goals in their four matches, but that was enough for them to top their group and also beat Ghana 1-0 in the last round

France vs Morocco (World Cup)

Coverage of the first quarter-final, which takes place at Boston Stadium in the USA, and is a repeat of the 2022 semi-final. Morocco made it through thanks to a 3-0 victory against co-hosts Canada on Saturday, upping their game in the second half after a goalless first period, and proving that their progression at the World Cup in Qatar was no fluke. They do, however, have to find a way past the tournament favourites, who were relieved to edge past Paraguay in the last round, in a match in which the South Americans tested every ounce of patience that Les Bleus possessed, with just a Kylian Mbappe separating the sides.
