South Africa and Canada have met only once in recorded history. That single encounter came in a friendly on November 20, 2007, with South Africa winning 2-0 at home. Sunday's Round of 32 meeting in Los Angeles is just the second time these two nations have faced each other.

The European side made it through to this stage after they finished top of Group F thanks to winning two and drawing one of their three matches. 5-1 and 3-1 victories over Sweden and Tunisia put them through after they drew 2-2 with Japan in their opening match of the tournament. Morocco finished second in Group C behind five-time winners Brazil on goal difference, and beat Haiti 4-2 in their final game to end their group campaign on seven points and progress to the knockout stages for the second successive time. These two sides have met just the once in a competitive match when they faced each other in a group match at the 1994 World Cup. Netherlands won that game 2-1 thanks to goals from Dennis Bergkamp and Bryan Roy.
